Prevention of child abandonment at birth in the Chisinau Republican Maternity

The project purpose

EveryChild has supported Chisinau Republican Maternity in a strong partnership with Ministry of Social Protection, Family and Child, Ministry of Health and Chisinau Local Authority to reduce by 50 % the number of children abandoned at birth within the maternity. The programme was carried out by:

  1. Developing a service to prevent child abandonment at birth in the Republican Maternity Hospital;
  2. Establishing a community residential service (Mother and Baby Unit) to support mother and baby in after birth period and strengthening community support for mothers and babies and prevent abandonment.

Result

The project provided sustainability by building the capacity of the staff in the Republican Maternity Hospital and the Directorate for Child Protection, establishing a multidisciplinary group within the maternity including social workers and psychologist. Other services such as health care, state benefits, vocational training of young mothers are provided in the community, the municipal Directorate for Child Rights Protection facilitating the beneficiaries’ full access to these services.
