450 words deciphered in symbols and signs that constitute the basic Makaton Language for children with communication issues were adapted to the context of the Republic of Moldova, with the support of a group of professionals in the area and the British Makaton Association.

For the following two years this language will be integrated into the professional practice in the country, as a work tool for children and adults facing communication difficulties. National practitioners who will be using Makaton language are currently participating in training for trainers moderated by representatives of Makaton Association. The workshop is organized in Chisinau on 4-6 April 2017.

Present at the event, Viorica Marţ, senior specialist at the Ministry of Education /ME/ thanked the program implementation partners, mentioning: “Makaton language offers a chance to children in the very first years of life to be able to communicate and to be understood by those around. This tool comes to support educational policies promoted by the ME in the area of inclusive education”.

The implementation of Makaton Language provides a tool, easy to use and to assimilate, helping the children to be understood by their parents, educators and family members. Thus, the child is helped to easier communicate the basic needs and to integrate into the school and into the community.

The event was organized by Partnerships for Every Child /P4EC/ within the project “Improving access to community-based early years and pre-school support services for vulnerable children with special needs in Moldova”, implemented in five regions of the country: Cahul, Calarasi, Falesti, Nisporeni, and Ungheni. Its main objective is to ensure the access of children with special needs, aged 0-7, and their families, to support programs developed under this project. The programs are oriented towards capacity-building of the parents and professionals, offering to these children better opportunities for the early development of their potential.

The project is implemented by P4EC, in collaboration with the British consortium of MellowParenting and HealthProm, supported by the Ministry of Labour, Social Protection and Family, Ministry of Education, and the authorities of the 5 pilot regions. The total cost of the project is 680 000 Euro, and is funded by the European Union.
